BOOKS FOR PNG KIDS

Long-standing client, Heather Doonan and her husband George, have lived in New Farm for the past 20 years and have travelled to Papua New Guinea many times since 1991 on business. Having four children of their own they became aware that most of the schools in PNG had no libraries. Most schools have no electricity or computers and are extremely basic. Heather and George have a website where you can see the schoolconditions - a real eye opener. www.Books4PNGkids.org
The Doonans have been sending books to schools in remote areas for the last 15 years and have found it a truly humbling and rewarding experience, they have had great support from many schools and individuals, but more books are always needed. Heather and George concentrate on primary school books (fiction or non-fiction), however, any books for young children are appreciated: anything from babies first books through to dictionaries and atlases. Books cover all denominations of schools and are taken to PNG regularly. Heather and George make a point of delivering the books directly to the schools themselves. It is hard to believe that even though PNG is Australia's closest neighbour, being a one hours flight from Cairns and having a population of 6.5 million people, it has nothing resembling a bookshop in the whole country, so even if the schools could afford to buy books, they are not available.

To donate books to Heather and George's organisation, please bring books into either of the studios. Heather will be collecting them on a weekly basis and organising them to take up to PNG on their next trip.

  1. Hi

I have been asked by a school in Kiunga, Papua New Guinea, to help with the acquisition of library books.

I was there recently and seven hundred vocational students, many of them adults, are starved of facilities, including the basics of living conditions [it is a boarding school] and standard classroom items.

Would you be able to help me?

    Cheers
